to draw with your eyes
doctoral thesis defended in July 2024. PhD in Visual Arts, line of contemporary artistic processes. PPGAV-UDESC-Brazil
This research deals with a reflection on contemporary drawing allied to the practices of my artistic process, to question what is understood as drawing and ways of proposing drawing as a practice for experiencing the environment. Starting from the classic definition of drawing as observation to represent the visible through the line on a support, the thesis seeks to investigate expanded possibilities of this definition in the contemporary sphere in visual arts and writing practices. It seeks to evaluate in personal projects and in literature methodologies and procedures that unfold in poetic research about contemporary drawing and the relationship with the image, with experience and the (in)visible. Divided into four chapters, this thesis seeks to explore the elements of point, line, and surface within visual and theoretical research, in creative processes and works carried out in recent years. In the first chapter, on the nature of drawing, I propose a reflection on this issue based on different theorists, as well as what I understand as a process and procedure for artistic production and the writing of the thesis itself. In the second, to draw with the eyes, I try to present the experience of observation as a drawing prior to the line scratched on the support, including theoretical reflections on the point, the zero and the origin. In the third chapter, drawing by invisible lines, I try to cover the layers of visibility and the types of (in)visible lines in my work with drawing, focusing on three possible types: cut line, ghostly line, and simulacrum line. In the last one, annaterritories, I propose to think about the surface based on drawings of territories that have “anna” in their names, and all their developments, which include cartographies, collections, trajectories, and itineraries. All this research is as theoretical as it is visual, also using resources such as diary writing, unfolding works and sketch drawings for its elaboration.
